Monarch High School made quite a statement on Friday night, rallying from a double-digit halftime deficit to knock off Cardinal Gibbons High School 20-13 on the road.
Despite falling behind 10-0 at halftime, the Knights scored 20 unanswered points in the second half before allowing a late field goal to improve to 2-1 this season.
“We have been starting slow the last few weeks,” Head Coach Calvin Davis said. “We knew we weren’t out of it, but it was a matter of making plays. We knew coming out in the second half it was all about adjustments. I thought we made the better adjustments in the second half offensively to move the ball, and our guys made plays.”
The game began with Anthony Williams intercepting a pass before the Knights were stopped on fourth down in the red zone. Cardinal Gibbons missed a field goal on the ensuing possession before punching in its only touchdown of the game in the second quarter.
The Chiefs added a field goal just before halftime to take a 10-0 lead, but Monarch quarterback Jeremiah Milicent came out firing in the second half.
Milicent connected with Sanjae Fisher for the Knights’ first touchdown to cut the deficit to four. He then found Chris Cortinas for another score to give Monarch its first lead of the game before connecting with Bryan Bynes for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 20-10.
“We got a lot of weapons,”Milicent said. “I just try to get them in open space and let them make a play.”
Cardinal Gibbons cut the deficit to three with a late field goal and got the ball back with about a minute remaining, but Gabriele Scarsini sealed the victory with an interception.
Monarch will have a week off before facing Piper High School on Friday, September 18, at 7 p.m. The Bengals are 1-2, with their lone win coming against Plantation High School. Monarch won 41-32 when the teams met last season.
