Monarch High School concluded a busy week of sports, with teams competing in playoffs against some of the country’s top schools.
The football team lost to St. Thomas Aquinas High School, the second-ranked team in the state and 14th in the nation, with a score of 31-20. The Knights led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and through halftime, but went on to allow 21 points in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter.
The Knights are 4-4 and will play Piper High School on Friday, October 24, at 7 p.m. The Bengals are 5-3 this season, but lost 22-20 in the lone matchup a season ago.
The girls’ volleyball team went 6-6 during the regular season, beating Coral Springs High School twice, along with one win against J.P. Taravella, Coconut Creek, Blanche Ely, and South Plantation High School. The Knights were seeded fifth and played J.P. Taravella for the second time after the first match went five sets. They would play five more sets, but the Knights would lose 16-25, 25-22, 25-12, 19-25, 15-
The swim team swam in the BCAA Championship on Sunday, with the boys’ team coming in 20th place. Their best results came in the relay with Vinh Vo, Chase Navarette, Arthur Meneghin, and Ethan Guzman swimming in the 200-yard medley relay and Ethan Guzman, Navarette, Elior Pinto, and Meneghin swimming in the 200-yard freestyle. Samuel Robayo and Jad Sadik each swam in individual races for the Knights. The girls placed 23rd, with Olivia Smith, Taylor Navarette, Victoria Bixby, and Josselynn Zapata placing 18th in the 200-yard freestyle, while these swimmers also competed individually in the preliminaries.
In cross country, the boys’ team finished in 21st place in the BCAA Championship at Markham Park. Jaiden Roberts finished first for the Knights, followed by Brian Colquhoun, Landon Kerlegrand, Kenyon Byron, Adrian Graham, Garidson Jean-Marie, and Dorian Toussaint. Sophia Ortega ran for girls while Ethan Weiss played in the BCAA Championship at the Country Club of Coral Springs and shot an 81 and finished 22nd
