“To be a successful elementary school teacher, one must have a genuine love for children and a desire to make learning fun.” Jocelyn Reid, the new principal at Coconut Creek Elementary School, expects this from her teachers and believes a principal must serve the teachers and help them grow as professionals.
Reid is joining Coconut Creek from Walker Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, where she served as principal for two years. Before that, she was the Deerfield Park Elementary School principal in Deerfield Beach for ten years. Both schools were classified as critical-need schools, and she successfully led them to achieve their goals.
“Coconut Creek is doing well academically, and I want to ensure we continue on the path to success. I am working to get to know the teachers and school community,” said Reid.
According to Reid, relationships are essential to success as a principal. She believes teachers should feel supported and have the resources to succeed. Reid considers herself a hands-on principal and will often visit classrooms and, if necessary, share insights with teachers.
“I believe the best teachers love kids, and they know how to make learning fun. Good teachers also have in-depth knowledge of the subjects they teach,” said Reid.
School starts soon at the B-grade school, and Reid is enthusiastic about the upcoming year. She mentioned that several new teachers have joined the campus, and she is eager to build positive connections with teachers, students, and parents.
The school has a garden club and a drama club. Reid wants to see mentoring programs for boys and girls. She is working to get to know the community and has met with Coconut Creek Mayor Sandra Welch.
Reid earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Florida A&M University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Florida Atlantic University. She began teaching at Dillard Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale before pursuing a career in administration.
