A new semi-professional men’s soccer team has begun play, and the organization already plans to expand by launching a women’s team based in Coconut Creek this spring.
The men’s team joined the league earlier than expected after another team unexpectedly dropped out. With less than a day to assemble a roster, the team suffered a narrow debut loss before responding with a 4-0 victory after its first full week of training.
The roster features former professional players, college national champions and talented local players. Richard Kerster scored twice in the team’s first victory, while Shawn Barry helped the team record a clean sheet.
The self-funded program hopes to keep costs low and provide opportunities at no cost when necessary. Along with adding the women’s team this spring, future plans include moving into a higher division, adding a second team and potentially creating showcase teams for younger players.
The program was created to give local players access to high-level training and competition at an affordable cost while providing pathways to college and professional opportunities. It also emphasizes commitment, discipline, academics and respect while helping players pursue opportunities at higher levels of soccer.
