A New York man who allegedly used counterfeit credit cards to repeatedly make cash withdrawals from ATMs in Coconut Creek was arrested March 4, police said.
Igor Surdu, 37, of Brooklyn is charged with five counts of possessing counterfeit credit cards and four counts of receiving money through credit card fraud, court records show.
Detectives with the Coconut Creek Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) caught up with Surdu after police received at least five reports of fraudulent card activity at ATMs on West Hillsboro Boulevard in the city’s North Creek section, according to an arrest affidavit.
SET detectives said they began staking out the location of one of the cash machines, a 7-Eleven store at 4550 W. Hillsboro Blvd. Over several says, they saw Surdu make withdraws from the store’s ATM as well as from another ATM at a nearby Walgreens, court records state.
After each cash withdrawal, a victim would contact the police department and file a report of fraudulent use of their credit or debit card, police said. Police believe Surdu ripped off at least four victims using counterfeit cards.
“This is a good example of why it’s important to check your credit card and bank card statements regularly,” police wrote in a Facebook post announcing Surdu’s arrest.
On March 4, detectives followed Surdu as he left the 7-Eleven, got into a car, and drove off, according to the affidavit. Police pulled Surdu over a short time later and booked him into the Broward County Jail. Records indicate he was released on a $12,500 bond.
