Goal! Parkland Buddy Sports Soccer is about to return.
“We’ve opened up registration, and we’re looking forward to coming back,” said Vice Mayor Bob Mayersohn, who has been involved with Buddy Sports since its inception.
The nationally recognized nonprofit organization has provided peer-to-peer sports programming for children and young adults with special needs since 2002.
Currently, they are monitoring COVID-19 statistics and hoping to be back on the fields with everyone soon, so interested families should sign up to ensure they are informed when it’s time to play.
“Ultimately, it’s about the well-being of our players, volunteers, and coaches, especially those who have compromised immunities, and keeping them as safe as they can be,” said Mayersohn.
The soccer season typically runs from November through January, with games on Saturday afternoons. Teams will learn fundamentals in an informal, low-pressure environment, in addition to having warm-up instruction and one-on-one time with a buddy.
Parkland Buddy Sports programs and events for children start at age 4, and volunteering opportunities are available on Saturdays, from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. Most Buddy volunteers are high school students, but the program also allows elementary and middle school students and adults.
“We have some great volunteers,” said Mayersohn. “And through engagement, education, and empowerment, they realize they can make a difference in somebody’s life.”
