The Florida Department of Education released the standardized test scores for the 2020-2021 school year, and Parkland students’ performance significantly decreased.
In a press release, Broward County Public Schools stated since students were attending school remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and some parents were reluctant to send their children in person to test, participation was lower overall. Additionally, BCPS had significantly higher rates of students remaining at home for instruction compared to other Florida districts.
Superintendent Robert W. Runcie stated they were concerned about the achievement results.
“The decrease in performance on the assessments correlates with the very low rate of return by students for in-school, face-to-face instruction last school year,” he stated. “The return of students for brick-and-mortar instruction this coming school year is imperative to ensure students can work with teachers and receive supplemental supports.”
Due to the cancellation of statewide testing in 2020, results were compared to scores from the 2018- 2019 school year.
On the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) Math test, performance levels range from 1 to 5, with 1 as the lowest and 5 as the highest. A score of 3 indicates satisfactory performance, and 4 is considered proficient.
The percentages of students who scored a 3 or higher in mathematics are shown below.
Heron Heights Elementary
3rd Grade 82% in 2019 to 75% in 2021
4th Grade 90% in 2019 to 75% in 2021
5th Grade 72% in 2019 to 75% in 2021
Park Trails Elementary
3rd Grade 90% in 2019 to 61% in 2021
4th Grade 87% in 2019 to 74% in 2021
5th Grade 87% in 2019 to 70% in 2021
Riverglades Elementary
3rd Grade 84% in 2019 to 63% in 2021
4th Grade 78% in 2019 to 80% in 2021
5th Grade 83% in 2019 to 77% in 2021
Somerset Parkland Academy (first year)
3rd Grade 70% in 2021
4th Grade 75% in 2021
5th Grade 71% in 2021
Although school scores significantly decreased, students’ math FSA averages exceeded Florida and Broward County proficiency ratings by large margins.
Math performance at Westglades Middle School also decreased in all grades. However, their average scores far exceeded Florida and Broward County proficiency ratings as well.
6th grade 84% in 2019 to 64% in 2021
7th grade 82% in 2019 to 68% in 2021
8th grade 74% in 2019 to 51% in 2021
At Somerset Parkland Academy, 57% of 6th graders scored between 3 and 5 in their first year of testing.
A School Board workshop is scheduled for August 24 to review the FSA results, the District’s analysis, and any subsequent reports from the Florida Department of Education.
