Coconut Creek continues to produce strong football, with a pair of teams making the postseason.
Monarch High School won its third straight District Championship and was seeded fourth in the postseason. The Knights played only nine games in the regular season, and two of their losses came against top-ten teams in the country. However, they matched up against Hkmestesd High School and won 28-20 in their first game behind two rushing touchdowns from Samari Reed. Florentino Lopez had 167 rushing yards and a score, while Jack Speader also had a touchdown.
Monarch went on the road to face top-seeded South High School and lost 20-14 to finish the season 7-4. Over a dozen seniors will graduate; several have already committed to playing at the next level.
Coconut Creek High School had a tough start to the season, losing its first three games, but went on to go 4-5 during the regular season. With its demanding schedule throughout the year, the Cougars earned the sixth seed, played Blanche Ely High School in its first playoff game, and fell by a touchdown 34-27.
The Cougars also had Jeremiah Accius finish 54th in cross country, followed by Tyler Joseph and John Jacques. Salaya Campbell and Layla Naves represented the Coconut Creek girls.
Joshua Reneau, Gavin Mulligan, and Brian Colquhoun ran for the Monarch boys’ cross country team, while Riley Cockrehan, Luna Hill, and Isabella Alba competed for the girls’ team.
North Broward Prep did not qualify for the postseason for football but won 21-7 over Pine Crest in their final game. Their volleyball team also reached the Regional Semifinals after winning a District Championship, while Willis Gillis led the cross country team to a 24th-place finish at the State Championship.
In golf, the girls’ team won a District Championship, led by Jerera Mendez, who placed third with a 78. Jordan Ellis scored 87 to finish in sixth, followed by strong rounds from Tingting Zhuang, Ava Koury, and Cooper Aucoin. The boys and the swim team also competed at Regionals.
