Broward County Superintendent Robert Runcie provided another virtual update on the future of the school year at a special school board meeting.
Held on Tuesday, it included information about graduation, a budget freeze, and a special thank you to teachers and staff amid the COVID-19 crisis.
He began by saying how distance learning will never replace the value of the important relationships and opportunities Broward schools provide on their campuses.
“Our schools matter, and our teachers matter,” he said.
As far as graduation updates, Runcie said they have been holding discussions with groups representing two seniors from each high school to work on alternative options.
“We have been meeting virtually, and they have some great ideas,” he said.
They plan to finalize their recommendation and the direction they are going to go by the end of next week.
Runcie also put a budget freeze into effect, putting all of the district’s discretionary spending on hold. He said they would begin renegotiating current contracts, starting with the most expensive items first.
He ended his speech by thanking staff for continuing to step up and providing continuity for the students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
