Children have an avid listener when they read to Ruby the therapy dog at the Parkland Library.
Parkland Library Program Specialist Michele Andrews said children love to read to Ruby who has been coming to the library with her owner Abbe Stampone for a year. Before that, Abbe brought her first dog Daisy, who passed away three years ago.
“I think the children really enjoy reading to Ruby,” said Andrews. “The children bring books from home or choose from the books I have on display for them. They light up when it’s their turn to read.”
She said that some children read fluently and are just excited to read to Ruby and some children struggle to read but want to practice because Ruby is there to listen to them. Abbe also listens and helps the children read if they get stuck.
Ruby will be available on September 8, 2017, 3:00 p.m. ?-?4:00 p.m. Children ages 5-12 are encouraged to bring a book from home or choose one at the library. Each child will have the opportunity to read for about five minutes. A Parkland Library Card is required to register. To register visit City of Parkland Library or call 954-757-4207.
