Coconut Creek has always produced excellent high school baseball, and this year was another example.
The Monarch High School baseball and softball team faced challenges along the way, but they completed terrific seasons with runs in the postseason.
The Monarch baseball team finished the season 9-11 and won over Coral Springs High School 2-0 in the opening round of Districts. The Knights, though, fell 8-0 against Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the District Semifinals. The Knights went on to miss Regionals and will have seniors Jerome Shephard, Dominic Guzman, Jael Hernandez, Adriel Gonzalez, Jacob Hennessey, Alejandro Cruanas, Alex Fogel, Nick Dematteom and Daniel Ophime graduate this year.
Gonzalez finished the season with a team-high .377 batting average, while Diego Rojas, Anthony Potenzano, Jeo Hernandez, and Dominic Guzman all hit over .300. Gonzalez hit four home runs, while Crunas recorded three. On the mound, Danny Tartaglia finished with three wins, while Juan Londano recorded two. Hernandez, Ophime, and Anthony Mercado all recorded one victory.
In softball, Monarch qualified for Regionals before falling in the opening round 10-4 against St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Sammie Rice drove in two of the four wins, while Emily Phipps and Camryn Piskun each drove in one. The Knights finished the season with a record of 10-12 under first-year coach Andy Aronofsky. Kylie Kim and Mary Miannay are the only seniors, as the Knights were led offensively this year by Piskun.
She hit. 441, while Faith Linderman and Sammie Rice each hit over .400. Kim, Elena Ramirez, Savannah Curtis, Gabriela Pearson, and Mia Macaione all batted over .300, with Maccaione and Rice hitting two home runs. Linderman and Sara Connor both went deep once, while Macaione and Ramirez pitched in 19 games and struck out 127 hitters in 119.1 innings.
Despite Coconut Creek High School’s baseball season ending early, the Eagles are two wins away from another State Championship following their 13-0 win against St. John Paul II Catholic.
They beat Melbourne Central and Coral Springs Charter in Regionals before dominating the Championship at St. John Paul II Academy, with TJ Gramesty hitting a home run. Mateo Gray tossed five shutout innings and struck out eight while seven different players drove in runs.
The Eagles have now won four straight Regional Titles and already have won a District Title, Perfect Game Showcase, and Palm League Championship. They are the top seed at the State Championship and will play Bishop Verot in their first game on Tuesday, April 21, at 10 a.m.
The Vikings are 23-5 this year, while Westminster Christian Academy will play Trinity Christian Academy in the other Semifinal game.
