While most students were off for the holidays, several student-athletes from Coconut Creek celebrated championships in various tournaments.
The North Broward Prep girls basketball team won a championship, winning all three Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational games. The Eagles beat Winthrop College Prep Academy, George Jenkins, all by at least 10 points.
Kaydie Sturm led the team in points with 16 during their first game, while Ysamar Pimental and Makena Longo were the leading scorers in the other two games. Alexa Schwartz scored in double figures in all three games, with Pimental winning MVP. The Eagles will play Palmer Trinity High School in their next game on Wednesday, January 8, at 3 p.m.
The North Broward Prep boys basketball team struggled in their opening tournament, losing all three games. The Eagles fell 66-54 against Union Catholic High School in their first matchup despite Luigi Borio scooting 17 points. Jayden Smith and Samuel Cano each were in double figures before they fell 55-52 against St. Peter Prep. Ryan Bailey had 13 points, while Cano and Smith combined for 21. NBP lost 61-50 in their final game and then again against Westen High School 48-43 and will play Christian Academy in their next game on Tuesday, January 7 at 6 p.m.
The Coconut Creek High School boys basketball team played in two games, falling 65-61 in overtime against North Miami High School behind 13 points from Nash Youte. Tavares Holmes added 12 points, while Warren Noel, Zay Aliensy, and Dallas Dixon scored eight.
The Cougars lost to Braddock High School 63-53, while Youte scored 20. Coconut Creek had seven players score in that game as they are now 1-8 heading into their game on Tuesday against Charles W. Flanagan High School at 7:30 p.m.
Monarch High School was impressed with the Panther Invite on Saturday at Coral Springs Charter, where it had several top finishes, including a win from Tyler Metellus.
He took first place in the 113 weight class after going undefeated, while Aiden Franco and Diddier Castillo Carrillo each came in fourth place. Devon Rhodes and Jaheim Dawkinsall placed at the top, while the Knights had three sixth-place finishers: Drew Weaver, Binyamin Simpson, and Justin Grimm. Ty Herbster. Jaeden Santos, Ethan Guzman, and Gabriel Franco competed, collecting several wins and helping the team to place eight. Rosie Kelin and Megan Han each went 2-0 for the girls team at Jensen Beach High School.
