Now in its ninth season, School Duel is back featuring ten Broward County Public Schools teams – including Marjory Stoneman High School.
Beginning, Thursday, January 24, 2019, The Broward Education Communications Network (BECON) will feature teams from Cooper City High School, Coral Springs High School, Cypress Bay High School, Deerfield Beach High School, Everglades High School, Fort Lauderdale High School, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Miramar High School, South Broward High School and Western High School.
School Duel is an academic quiz show, designed to reward and showcase intellectual student talent in South Florida’s high schools, as well as serve as a positive educational tool for BCPS students and teachers.
The 19-show series features four-person teams who compete in a single elimination tournament to determine a School Duel champion. To participate, 67 high schools in the area competed in an online test and the top 20 schools made it to the televised rounds. In addition to the ten BCPS high schools, five high schools from Miami Dade County Public Schools and five from Palm Beach County Public Schools will also participate in this year’s competition.
School Duel consists of four rounds of questions, covering a variety of subject areas. The show begins with the First Strike round, featuring 10-point toss-up questions answered by either team. The second round, the Joust, matches individual players head-to-head for a 10-point question, with the winner earning their team the chance to answer three more bonus questions worth up to 30 additional points. Round three is the Rapid Action round, where teams try to answer up to 10 questions in a 60-second time limit. The final round, the Final Showdown, consists of a series of toss-up questions, worth 20 points each.
The players on the winning and runner-up teams will each receive prizes from sponsors, including a $1,000 check for each winning student courtesy of BrightStar Credit Union and Chick-fil-A, a $200 check for each runner-up courtesy of Publix, and a championship trophy from EDCO Awards and Specialties. The winning school will also receive a School Duel trophy.
School Duel airs every Thursday night at 8 p.m., starting January 24 on BECON-TV. A new episode of School Duel will air every following Thursday evening, through the show’s championship game on May 30, 2019.
In addition to Thursday at 8 p.m., that week’s School Duelepisode will air again on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m.
BECON-TV reaches homes throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. Parkland residents can watch via Comcast Cable (channel 19), DirecTV, DISH Network and AT&TU-Verse (channel 63).
