The North Broward Prep football team opened the postseason with a 38-6 win over Avon Park on Thursday night, highlighted by a record-setting performance from kicker Mateo Sanchez.
The Boston College commit, along with long snapper Aidan Field, set a school record for kicking points in a game as Sanchez converted four field goals and two extra points.
His first field goal came from 35 yards out to close the first half, giving the Eagles a 22-6 lead heading into halftime. Sanchez added three more field goals in the second half, including a season-long 52-yarder in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles opened the scoring on special teams when Thor Hwasta blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. The Red Devils responded with their only touchdown of the game to tie the score, but Christian Deering took over, scoring the next three touchdowns on the ground.
Sanchez converted an extra point following one of Deering’s touchdowns, while Noah Moss also connected on his only extra-point attempt. North Broward Prep attempted two-point conversions following its other two touchdowns as the Eagles pulled away for the victory.
The Eagles improved to 5-6 this season and will face Somerset Academy in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m. The Cougars won only two regular-season games but defeated Lake Placid High School 21-13 in their opening playoff game.
