From State Rep Christine Hunschofsky:
As we kick off October, we are reminded that this month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
If you have not had a mammogram in the past year, now is a good time to schedule an appointment. Early detection can save your life, so I encourage all of you to be proactive with your screenings. Eligible women can receive free breast and cervical cancer screenings at various locations in Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin counties through the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call (954) 762-3649.
Our communities also have several events this month to raise awareness and funds for the cause. The Coral Springs-Parkland Annual Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner will be on October 25 from 5-9 pm at Fire Station #80, 2825 Coral Springs Drive. For just $8, you can enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our firefighters. Additionally, “Not My Daughter … Find a Cure Now” will have its annual luncheon on October 27 at the Heron Bay Marriott. For more information, please visit notmydaughter.org.
October is also a time to bring attention to mental health, with World Mental Health Day on October 10. We are fortunate to have many mental health resources available in Broward County.
If you or someone you know needs help, the new crisis hotline number is 988. In Broward you can dial 211 or visit 211-Broward.org to connect with resources in the community. Additional resources include Eagles Haven (eagleshaven.org) which offers free wellness programs and licensed clinicians, Tomorrow’s Rainbow (tomorrowsrainbow.org) which provides free grief counseling, and the Children’s Bereavement Center (childbereavement.org) which has free grief support groups.
Every person has struggles with their mental and physical health sometime in their life. It’s important to acknowledge when we need help and to get the help we need.
This month also marks the start of Legislative Committee Weeks in Tallahassee. We will be in the Capitol October 6-10 and October 12-17 as we prepare for the upcoming 2026 legislative session. You can find more information about our schedules at flhouse.gov.
As always, our constituents are our number one priority, and we want to hear from you. We have a pre-legislative session Town Hall on Wednesday, October 29, from 7-8 pm at Coconut Creek City Hall, 4800 W Copans Road. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Additionally, we would love for you to fill out and share your thoughts through our Pre-Session Survey which you can find here: tinyurl.com/2026HD095. I look forward to hearing all of your priorities and concerns as we head into the 2026 Legislative Session.
As always, it is an honor to serve as your State Representative.
