Marjory Stoneman Douglas seniors Julia Suconic and Zoe Gordon each received a $20,000 scholarship from MEDNAX, one of the largest neonatology physician-led organizations in the country.
Suconic, who plans to study cellular molecular biology, will major in pre-med at John Hopkins University, and Gordon will major in communications at Cornell University in the fall.
Suconic and Gordon will receive $5,000 each year during their four years of college.
Since its inception, the MEDNAX Foundation has given away eight scholarships totaling over $90,000 to MSD graduates. The company came up with the idea for the MEDNAX Supporting Students Foundation to help the families and the students after their lives were shattered in the February 14, 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Todd Foote, the associate vice president of finance for the Sunrise-based company, believes that with a little help, all children can overcome adversity and grow up to make a positive impact on the world.
After Foote’s son lost five friends and his cross-country coach, Scott Beigel, in the massacre, he struggled with figuring out a way to give back.
As part of the MEDNAX MSD Strong Scholarship, seniors can further their education and become an inspiration to others, while the funds provide financial assistance to them as undergraduates.
The scholarship selection process focuses on academic performance, leadership potential, community service, volunteering, and financial need.
