Homicide detectives are urging the community to provide tips or information to help solve a shooting that killed a Coconut Creek High School student.
Lamarius Walker, 18, was fatally shot in the 2800 block of Northwest Second Street in Pompano Beach on Sept. 16, 2022, shortly after 10 p.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit.
BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the shooting scene, where Walker lay in the roadway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. Paramedics pronounced Walker dead at the scene.
BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene Units responded to investigate the killing. Detectives said they believe there were multiple people involved in the shooting.
Days after the shooting, Walker’s mother told CBS4 Walker was a twin and was walking to the store to get a bag of chips for his five-year-old sister when he was shot.
In a GoFundMe post, Walker’s mother, who did not provide her name, said the killing happened “steps away from our home.”
“He was watched while walking home by the people who would soon be those who would take his life,” she wrote. “He asked me if he could go to the store, and he never made it back to me. He was shot mercilessly multiple times.”
She said Lamarius was “a fantastic kid and a twin who was not a part of gang violence and had never gotten into trouble.”
“And this is what hurts the most,” she wrote. “I moved to Pompano, inspired to give my children an opportunity to explore a new environment and grasp new opportunities.”
She said her son showed his friends in the neighborhood that “there was life outside of the streets…He gave them hope that there was a way out of the struggle.”
“He was only mine for a while, but I know he never belonged to this earth; he was always too good for the evil that haunts it.”
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting, the identity of those involved, or the location of the suspects to call BSO Homicide Detective Ryan Schnakenberg at 954-321-4247.
Tipsters can also submit tips through the SaferWatch app. If they wish to remain anonymous, they should contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online at browardcrimestoppers.org or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
According to BSO, any Crime Stoppers tip that leads to an arrest in the case is eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
