A Coconut Creek resident was recently victimized by a scammer who falsely claimed the man had won a prize.
According to Coconut Creek Police, the man contacted authorities after falling victim to the “prize scam” and realizing he had been targeted.
The scam played out after the victim connected with someone on Facebook who claimed he’d won a large sum of prize money, police said.
The scammer told the victim to buy $40 worth of Google Play gift cards as a “delivery fee” for the package supposedly containing the prize money, according to the department.
The criminal then requested an additional $500, at which point the victim realized he was being scammed and refused to send more money, police said.
Additional details about the case were not made public. No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday.
“Remember: you can’t win a prize for a contest you never entered,” the department said in a social media post. “If you have to spend money to get your prize, it’s a scam.”
