Coconut Creek Police warn residents about a Facebook Messenger scam that criminal hackers use to fleece targets.
According to police, a woman who lives in Coconut Creek recently sent money solicited from her on the Facebook Messenger app to a person she thought was her friend.
It turned out the friend’s Facebook page had been hacked, and the person she sent money was a criminal impersonator, the victim told police.
The hacker asked the victim to send the money through the Zelle app. The victim didn’t realize it at the time, but later, she noticed the hacker’s phone number didn’t match her friend’s. That’s how she eventually figured out she had been scammed, police said.
In an effort to prevent more victims from falling prey to Facebook Messenger scammers, police told residents to contact friends or family outside of the app to confirm their identity.
