Brian Blizzard was sworn in as the Coconut Creek fire chief during the November 14 commission meeting.
Blizzard was named incoming fire chief by city manager Sheila Rose on September 12 and served in that position until former chief Gary Farmer officially retired at the end of October.
He was hired as assistant fire chief on June 21 and was one of the Coconut Creek Fire Rescue’s founding fathers. He served as interim fire chief from July 1, 2022, to January 2, 2023, according to Scotty Leamon, public information officer for the city.
Before coming to Coconut Creek, Blizzard worked for the St. Lucie County Fire District for over 30 years. According to Leamon, he began his career as a volunteer firefighter for the Plantation Fire Department in 1986 and graduated from the National Fire Academy’s executive fire officer program.
Blizzard looks forward to leading the fire department and caring for the family of emergency services. “I was humbled and overwhelmed to be named the fire chief. I aim to support our firefighters and care about their health and safety.”
According to Leamon, Blizzard believes education is important for leading a fire service. He has a master’s degree in public administration from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Warner University.
According to the city website, Blizzard has been married to Shari for over 28 years and has three children: Austin, Lexi, and Jake.
