The struggle between Coconut Creek and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) continues.
During a commission meeting on November 13, City Attorney Terrill Pyburn announced that the city’s legal department filed an amended complaint in response to the FDOT’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit involving the city’s effort to prevent the expansion of the Florida Turnpike from six lanes to ten lanes where it passes through Coconut Creek.
There is no compelling need for the turnpike expansion, according to Mayor Jackie Railey. Adverse impacts will include noise, air pollution, traffic congestion, vibration, physical encroachment into neighboring communities, and decreased property values, according to the complaint.
Railey said the city has been fighting the turnpike expansion for at least twelve years, and she will continue to fight because expanding it will harm many residents.
“I believe the turnpike expansion will hurt the residents of Wynmoor and South Creek, and that is why I am fighting it,” said Railey.
