Coconut Creek is involved in a lawsuit aimed at protecting its residents.
During the August 28 meeting, City Attorney Terrill Pyburn announced that she had filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) due to their plans to expand the Florida Turnpike in Coconut Creek, between Atlantic Boulevard and Wiles Road. There was no further discussion after the announcement was made.
This follows years of complaints by commission members and community leaders during public meetings about the effects that a widened turnpike, moved west, would have on city neighborhoods, particularly those close to the homes of some residents.
Mayor Jackie Railey said that an expanded turnpike would harm the quality of life for the city’s residents who live near it. She is especially concerned for residents of the South Creek neighborhood and the Wynmoor community.
“We have been fighting this battle for years, and I know residents who feel their homes vibrate when trucks drive by on the turnpike. Now they want to move it 40 to 50 feet closer to our homes. This is not fair to our residents,” said Railey.
