Coconut Creek residents may be able to vote for their mayor beginning in 2029.
Currently, a mayor is selected by the commission and serves the role for one year.
During the April 25 meeting, the commission passed an ordinance on first reading by a 3-2 vote to move forward on having an elected mayor.
The entire city would elect a mayor, and commissioners would be elected from four rather than five districts. Currently, the mayor and vice mayor are elected from the five district commissioners.
According to Joseph Kavanagh, city clerk, the redrawing of four districts will ensure fair and effective representation for the residents with a transparent and public participation process.
Public meetings will be scheduled, allowing for community input and feedback. According to Kavanagh, these sessions will be crucial in shaping the new district boundaries based on population changes and other statutory requirements.
The second reading for this ordinance is scheduled for the May 9, 2024, commission meeting. The outcome of this vote will determine whether the matter will be placed on the ballot for the November 2024 referendum.
