A Coconut Creek man was charged with a host of crimes last Saturday for intentionally driving around with three French Bulldog puppies in his hot car until they died, police said.
Nikolay Sanint Rodriguez, 29, allegedly kept the five-week-old puppies around in a shoebox inside his gray 2011 Mercedes-Benz sedan for hours on May 26, despite the car lacking air conditioning, according to an arrest affidavit filed by Wilton Manors Police.
The high temperature in the city that day reached 97 degrees.
“The defendant kept [the puppies] for multiple hours in a shoe box, making no attempt to get them medical attention,” police wrote. “The defendant had a cell phone and had the ability to call for help. There is even a nearby 24-hour pet hospital.”
The dogs were brought to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Oakland Park, where veterinary staff said there appeared to be trauma to all three animals and some blood on their tongues, police said.
A necropsy will be performed on the puppies to learn more about their deaths.
Police said they encountered Rodriguez while responding to a call about the dead puppies in a shoebox on a sidewalk in the 2200 block of Wilton Drive.
Rodriguez was standing outside his car on the side of the road in a no-parking area, with the dead dogs just a few feet away, police said.
Police searched the Mercedes-Benz and found ketamine, methamphetamine, and psilocybin mushrooms, the arrest report states.
“[Rodriguez] was extremely paranoid during our whole interview,” police wrote.
Rodriguez was charged with three counts of animal cruelty, three counts of unlawful disposal of a dead animal, and three drug possession charges.
Records show he was booked into a Broward jail and released on an $18,450 bond.
