The controversy over the expansion of Monarch Hill Landfill continues.
The Coconut Creek Commission, senior leadership, and most residents who have attended meetings on the issue strongly oppose the expansion of the landfill. Some have attended Broward Commission meetings to voice their opposition.
According to Yvonne Lopez, spokesperson for Coconut Creek, the city has initiated legal action against the County due to a 30-day deadline requirement to file a Comprehensive Plan Challenge. Concurrently, the city is engaged in the Chapter 164 Intergovernmental Dispute Resolution Process with the County.
Commissioner John Brodie has been very outspoken in his opposition to the landfill expansion. He wants to see it closed. “Waste Management has not completed environmental studies, and it will harm the residents of Coconut Creek,” he said.
According to Brodie, Deerfield Beach has joined the Coconut Creek legal action.
Mayor Jackie Railey is also opposed to the expansion. She said toxins from the landfill are contaminating the water around the site, and she believes the planned expansion will harm residents.
