Commissioner John Brodie is on a mission. He wants eighth graders to read and understand the U.S. Constitution.
A member of the 917 Society, a not-for-profit organization that distributes pocket constitutions to 8th graders and promotes civic engagement, Brodie has been leading an effort to deliver constitutions to local middle schools.
“I believe it is important for citizens to know about the U.S. Constitution and what it means for us. I want every eighth grader to learn about the Constitution,” said Brodie, an Army veteran.
Brodie has found that many adults are unfamiliar with the Constitution and the significance of the First Amendment. “I was at an airport recently and I had to explain the Constitution to a woman who knew little about it,” he said.
Recently, Brodie visited Lyons Creek Middle School and North Broward Preparatory School, delivering boxes of pocket-sized constitutions to students. He worked with members of the Rotary Club of Coral Springs to distribute the documents, mostly to middle schools in Coconut Creek and a few in surrounding cities.
