Coconut Creek Police officers began wearing body-worn cameras for the first time in the department’s history Tuesday, officials said.
The technology will be rolled out in phases as all police officers complete their body-worn camera training, a process that is expected to take several weeks, according to the department.
“Body-worn cameras will enhance transparency, provide accurate evidence for investigations, and help protect both officers and citizens,” the department said in a social media post Tuesday.
The cameras were paid for with a $963,000 grant from the Byrne Discretionary Grants program, which supports projects that improve the functioning of the criminal justice system, officials said.
