Coconut Creek is working to improve private water and wastewater systems.
During the May 8 meeting, the commission approved an ordinance on first reading to amend the city’s code to enhance the city’s ability to verify that privately-owned water and wastewater systems are properly maintained and in compliance with regulations.
This ordinance amendment to the city code will enhance the city’s ability to verify compliance with third-party systems.
Business owners responsible for privately maintained water or wastewater infrastructure who regularly maintain their systems and perform inspections will not be impacted. If a system fails or deteriorates, the owners may be required to submit documentation, reviewed and certified by a Florida-licensed professional engineer, confirming that their water and wastewater systems and all related components are operating as intended.
According to city information, the cost of these professional engineering services typically ranges from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the complexity and condition of the system.
Also, the commission approved on first reading an ordinance to amend the code to adopt the utilities and engineering standards manual and reference the 2025 edition. The city must update this manual to comply with industry standards. According to city information, the Planning and Zoning Board reviewed the proposed text amendment at a public hearing on April 9 and recommended the changes be approved.
