The Coconut Creek Commission began approving changes to the city charter.
During the May 22 meeting, the commission approved an ordinance to amend the city charter as adopted by the city charter review board on April 16 on first reading. It will come up for a second reading at a future meeting and, if approved, will be placed on the November 2026 ballot.
One of the major changes would be the requirement that homeowners association board members resign before taking office on the commission.
Mayor Jackie Railey, president of the Wynmoor Community Council, spoke out against the ordinance.
Railey said she believes that the homeowners association board members have shown they are committed and capable of serving on the commission and have done the hard work of local leadership. “Serving on a board should not be a disqualification; it should be a qualification to serve on the commission,” said Railey.
Commissioner Joshua Rydell said he fully supports Railey, but there can be perceived conflicts if a commissioner is serving on a homeowners association board that must deal with the commission.
