A 79-year-old Coconut Creek man was recently scammed out of a large amount of money by a con artist posing as a representative from Best Buy, police said.
The fraudster called the victim on the phone and falsely stated the man owed Best Buy a $199 fee, then talked the man into giving him access to his computer, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department.
The scammer transferred a large amount of money out of the victim’s bank account into one he controlled, police said.
Police did not specify how much money was stolen from the man.
No arrests had been announced in the case as of Monday night.
“While anyone, of any age, is susceptible to falling for a phone scam, the fraudsters often target seniors in particular,” the police department said in a social media post. “Always remember that no one representing any company would ever call you about an unpaid bill or fee. It’s a scam. So just hang up.”
