A Coconut Creek woman narrowly avoided losing a large amount of money after an alert bank teller recognized she was being targeted by a jury duty scam.
The Coconut Creek Police Department shared the incident in a recent scam alert, crediting the teller with stepping in before the woman handed over her money.
According to police, the woman received a call from a scammer posing as a law enforcement officer who told her she had missed jury duty. The caller instructed her to go to her bank and withdraw a large amount of money.
Police said the scammers likely planned to direct the woman to a Bitcoin machine to send the money after she made the withdrawal.
At the bank, a teller noticed the woman appeared scared and confused and asked why she was withdrawing so much money. After hearing the explanation, the teller immediately recognized the warning signs of a scam and persuaded the woman not to send the money.
“Bank tellers sometimes wear superhero capes,” Coconut Creek Police said in an online statement describing the employee’s intervention. “She certainly did a great job here!”
The incident comes amid continuing warnings about jury duty scams in South Florida. In July, the Broward County Clerk of Courts, 17th Judicial Circuit and Broward Sheriff’s Office warned residents that scammers have been impersonating law enforcement officers and judges while
Legitimate jury summonses are sent by mail, and residents should be suspicious of callers demanding immediate payments or threatening arrest over missed jury duty. Government agencies and financial institutions also do not instruct people to withdraw cash or use cryptocurrency to protect their money.
Coconut Creek Police offered simple advice to anyone who receives a similar call: Hang up.
Residents who are unsure whether a jury-related communication is legitimate should independently contact the court using an official phone number rather than a number supplied by the caller.
