In the final game before the holiday break, Monarch High School’s boys and girls basketball teams picked up wins over their rival Coconut Creek High School on Thursday.
In the boys game, both teams came in with three wins. However, the Knights picked up their fourth victory with a 66-50 win over Coconut Creek. James Grady led the team with 15 points, while Troy Bitetto and Cody Dinall were in double figures with 13 and 10. Anthony Santamauro, A.J. Hairston, Peter Sziranyi, and Samari Reed all had at least six points to push the Knights to 4-7 this year.
The girls also won, defeating Coconut Creek 55-26 for their tenth win this season. Not only have they already surpassed their win total from 2021-22, they are also one win away from tying their win total of 11 from 2019-20. Kaunas Gilbert and Olvia Aponte combined for 25 points, while Saniah Whyte and Princess Greene each had nine points. For Coconut Creek, Abigail Theopioe led the Cougars with 12 points.
Next, both teams will return to action on the new year on Monday, Jan. 9, against West Broward High School. The girls will play first, followed by the boys against a school with only four games combined between the teams.
Coconut Creek’s boys and girls basketball teams will resume their season on Jan. 9, facing Plantation High School. The Cougars boys team has a record of 3-6, while the girls team is 2-5.
