City Selects Lt. Craig Calavetta As New BSO Parkland District Chief

The City of Parkland has selected Lieutenant Craig Calavetta as the new Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District Chief.

Second in command to the BSO Parkland division captain since 2017, Lt. Calavetta is a Parkland resident who first began his law enforcement career here. In 1991, he came to Parkland as a Public Safety Officer, providing law enforcement and firefighting services. He has since worked in patrol operations, criminal investigations, and the training division.

“Sheriff Tony personally called me last night and promoted me,” said Lt. Calavetta. “Parkland is very important to the sheriff and I’m honored that he put all his support behind me.”

Following Chris Mulligan’s retirement in July, three choices for the new captain were submitted to the city: Lt. Calavetta, Captain Andrea Tianga, and Lt. Michele McCardle.

A panel chosen by the city interviewed each candidate with the ultimate decision made by City Manager Nancy Morando.

Morando said the panel was impressed with all three candidates and felt any of them could do the job.

“The final decision was a matter of fit, and we believe Lt. Calavetta will be the best fit for Parkland,” she said.

The district has an annual operating budget of approximately $10 million and includes a district captain, one executive lieutenant, seven sergeants, 41 deputies, and other civilian positions.

Lt. Calavetta said his first order of business is bringing in a new executive lieutenant. He plans to provide a list of names that should be a good fit, and BSO will make the ultimate decision.

Former BSO Parkland District Captain Mulligan said Lt. Calavetta is dedicated to ensuring that Parkland residents continue to receive the highest level of service possible.

“I am extremely pleased for him and look forward to seeing what he has in store for the District.”

The official start date for Captain Calavetta is August 14.
