Authorities said a Coconut Creek woman was the victim of a gift card scammer who pretended to hire her for a fake job.
According to Coconut Creek Police, the victim recently received a text message from the man, who she thought was a representative from an employer considering her for a job.
The conman interviewed the woman and told her that she had gotten the job—with one caveat: She needed to first buy gift cards and provide him with the numbers on the cards, police said.
According to authorities, the fraudster said the woman needed to buy the gift cards to obtain a piece of equipment necessary for the job.
The victim bought the cards and gave the numbers to the man, only to later discover he was a phony.
“Remember that legitimate employers would never ask you to buy any items because they can buy those things themselves,” Coconut Creek Police said in a social media post about the scam.
No arrests had been announced in the case as of Monday night.
