Marjory Stoneman Douglas football defeated Coral Glades High School 28-3 in a key conference matchup on Thursday during Senior Night in Parkland.
MSD also moves closer to a second consecutive District Championship after 18 years. All they need is a win against J.P. Taravella next Friday to Coral Glades — or a win in their next conference matchup on November 20 against JPT.
It was also a special night for both Sheldon McCullum and Nick Dobbs. Both these players played for Coral Galdes last year before transferring over to MSD this season.
“It was just odd,” McCullum said. “I wanted to see what I could do against them, and we just wanted the win at the end of the day.”
For Dobbs, he let Coral Glades do all the talking on social media this week and let MSD’s play do the talking.
“It felt good to go out there and show them what we got here,” Dobbs said. “I still talk to a lot of them, but on the field, it is business.”
With both the Eagles and the Jaguars coming into the game with 1-0 records, it was a slow start for both teams. It took until the fourth possession of the game for either team to pick up the opening first down of the contest.
Coral Glades settled for a long field goal from Colton Eisenberg to open up a 3-0 lead, but he missed his next attempt in the final minutes of the first quarter.
MSD finally got going after Geovanni Vilsaint picked off a pass from Dylan Knaebel. Derek Geffrard scored the first touchdown of the game to push the Eagles up 7-3. On the next possession for MSD, Matt O’Dowd connected with Christian Spencer for a long touchdown to extend the lead to 11 right before halftime.
The Eagles scored two more touchdowns in the second half as Christopher Darius ran for a long touchdown. Then O’Dowd connected for his second touchdown pass of the game, this time going to senior Hervin Louis to close the game out.
“Offensively, we started off slow, but we got the run game going,” said Head Coach Quentin Short. “That was the first time we were able to connect on the deep ball. We just wore them down in the fourth quarter.”
Up next, the Eagles will head to Hallandale High School on Friday, November 13, at 7 p.m for their lone non-conference matchup of the season. The Jaguars will play Coral Springs High School as both teams hope to finish second in the conference. That game will also be on November 13 at 7 p.m.
