Two Marjory Stoneman Douglas juniors made it their mission to collect old children’s books and share them with the kids in the community.
Olivia Alvarez and Spencer Brenner are holding their Third Book Drive on Saturday, December 18, from 9 to 11 am, and on Sunday, December 19, from 3 to 5 pm.
The goal is to collect 750 books, but this goal will be surpassed judging by the previous book drives.
Alvarez’s and Brenner’s initiatives made a big difference during the pandemic. The 3,500 books collected helped students at Coral Springs Elementary and Hunt Elementary tackle virtual learning when the public library was closed during COVID-19.
Additionally, 1,100 books were donated to nonprofit Literacy Connection, Inc that works to illuminate the “book gap” and help families and communities to read and learn together.
All collected books from this event will be donated to the same organization and used for the mobile Operation R.E.A.D. literacy bus project bringing library services to the under-served areas.
The Book Drive is held in the Kensington Gardens’ green park, on the west side of Coral Springs Dr., South of Westview and Country Hills Elementary.
