Talk Media’s local online publications were named finalists for the 2023 Florida Press Club awards, and recognized for their timely and relevant reporting on news and politics in northwest Broward County.
On Nov 4, several writers at Talk Media were named:
Online, Independent News Site, Class A-C – Sallie James, for Parkland Talk
Writing, Government News, Class C – Agrippina Fadel, Tamarac Talk
Writing, Public Safety News C – Jim Donnelly, Coconut Creek Talk
Writing, Sports Writing, Class C – Matt Rothman, Parkland Talk
Photography, Portrait Personality Class C – Adam Baron, Coral Springs Talk
What was once just a way to connect neighbors in the community has grown into four online publications that are now must-reads for residents in Northwest Broward County — filling the hole newspapers left behind.
Based in Coral Springs, Talk Media was created in 2010 with The Woodlands and expanded to include Tamarac Talk in 2011, Coral Springs Talk in 2012, Parkland Talk in 2017, Margate Talk, and Coconut Creek Talk in 2022.
Between January and October of 2023, the online publications received 9.6 million unique views.
In 2022, Sharon Aron Baron took home first place in the Writing, Community News, Class B-C, for the expose of Gil J. Peter, Parkland Man Operates a Multi-Million Dollar Ponzi Scheme Alleges Attorneys, Victims, the investigative piece details how a resident financed his lavish lifestyle on the backs of unsuspecting investors, promising high returns on investments, ultimately giving excuses, even bouncing checks when victims tried to cash out.
Kevin Deutsch placed third in the same category for his story “About Damn Time:” Lynching Victim Rubin Stacy Honored After Vice Mayor’s Advocacy. The story was about Parkland vice mayor and attorney Ken Cutler’s research into Rubin Stacy’s life and efforts in educating local politicians about his lynching in 1935 by a mob of white vigilantes, laying the groundwork for a street named in his honor.
For nearly 70 years, the Florida Press Club has honored the best in Florida journalism, from layout to photography to writing. Originally called the Florida Women’s Press Club, as no other clubs allowed women to compete, it has expanded to include men’s and digital-only publications.
The Florida Press Club is a nonprofit organization of writers, editors, photographers, graphic artists, researchers, librarians, and support technicians working for Florida news organizations.
Winners will be announced in January of 2023 at the annual event in Clearwater Beach.
