North Broward Prep had an incredible spring season, highlighted by an MLB draft pick, State Championships, and numerous conference awards.
North Broward Prep graduate Yoel Tejada Jr. was selected in the 14th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He shined at North Broward Prep, going 15-0 on the mound and hitting .355 as a senior with four home runs and 30 RBIs. He went on to play his first year at the University of Florida despite getting drafted in the 19th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
As a freshman, Tejada went 2-0 and pitched to an ERA of 5.56 in eight games. He then transferred to Florida State University, where he pitched in 13 games, striking out 15 in 19.2 innings. Tejada entered the transfer portal after his sophomore season and will decide whether to sign or remain in college.
Mateo Gray, a University of Central Florida signee, shined at the plate and on the mound for the Eagles to be named Player of the Year and an All-American. He completed a historic season, winning their third State Championship in four years. The Eagles went 28-3 and finished the season ranked second in Florida and eighth in the nation. Gray hit .354 with two home runs, 21 RBIs, 23 runs, and 11 extra base hits. As a pitcher, Gray went 11-0 with a .68 ERA. He also struck out 87 batters in 75.2 innings and finished his high school career with the Eagles undefeated.
Alexa Schwartz was also named Player of the Year by the Track and Field Team. After finishing second at State last year, she improved and took first place, setting a school record. Max Friedman won Player of the Year in tennis and a State Championship. He finished 17-3 in singles and 8-4 in doubles.
The Eagles also had several players named to the First Team All-Conference. Riley Luft and Kiernan O’Neil were selected. Luft hit .378 and allowed only one run on the mound. He will attend Appalachian State University, while O’Neil hit .420, pitched 15 innings, and had seven saves. Brian Campbell was also named Coach of the Year.
Florida Atlantic University signee T.J. Gramesty made the Second Tean along with Nikolas Koorse. Max Burkholz, A.J. Cutler, Gian De Castro, Nate Hernandez, and Julian Rodriguez were Honorable Mentions.
In track and Field, Eric Kontos was picked to the First Team and finished 15th in the javelin at the State Championship. Jayden Smith made the second Tena in the high jump. Christopher Baker, Matthew Fullerton, and Caleb Makovsky were Honorable Mentions from the boys. The girls track and field team had Ella Munoz selected to the First in the long and triple jumps. She won four District events, while Kaiden O’Neill was recognized in the 400 hurdles.
Ivory Edgecomb was picked to the second team in the 100 meters along with Ysamar Pimentel in the high jump and the 4 x 100 relay with Alana Amsterdam, Ivory Edgecomb, Madelyn Kunz, and Munoz. Alana Amsterdam, Madelyn Kunz, Nina Sanquino, Saleyah Turner, Chelsea Ventura, and Destiny Wiggins were Honorable Mentions.
The tennis team had Honorable Mentions from Jacob Hartman from the boys team as well as Morgan Honig, Elise Pluta, and Sasha Stein from the girls team. Daniel Katz, Chandler Ripps, and George Quatela were Honorable Mentions from the boys lacrosse team.
The boys basketball team also had a commitment with Maximus Fuentes set to attend Jacksonville University. A Coconut Creek native, Fuentes made the varsity team at NBP as a freshman and, in 101 games, averaged 10.1 points per game. He eclipsed 1,000 career points during his senior season and helped the Eagles reach the Regional Semifinals, going 27-3.
Fuentes started his college career at Drexel University and played in two games as a freshman. He redshirted his second year, but shined in the classroom and was named CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with High Honors. Jacksonville had a rough season in 2024, but managed to make it all the way to the A-Sun Finals before losing to Stetson University and finishing with 16 wins.
