Parkland Library Classes and Events Through February 12

During construction of the new wing, the Parkland Library remains open and is holding many upcoming classes for all-ages. The new addition, set to open by the end of the year, will house a dedicated library for children as well as include new space for classes and events.

Upcoming Classes and Activities

Pawsitive Reading Program (K- 5th grade), Thursday, February 7, 3:30 p.m.

Visit the Parkland Library to practice your reading skills by reading to therapy dogs Sophie and Duncan. This program encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend who won’t mind if you make a mistake. Bring a book from home or choose one at the library. All Booked Up Book Discussion Group: Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke Saturday, February 9, 10:30 a.m.

When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules – a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders – a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman – have stirred up a hornet’s nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes, and save himself in the process, before Lark’s long-simmering racial fault lines erupt. From a writer and producer of the Emmy-winning Fox TV show Empire, Bluebird, Bluebird is a rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas. Registration is not required. Artist of the Month: Alicia Maria Vallejo Artist’s Reception, Saturday, February 9, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Alicia María Vallejo, a professional anthropologist, has found, in art and painting, a form of communion with the environment over time and through her own experiences. Her painting fosters spiritual renewal through works in which color, taste and sound acquire harmony. Alicia Maria’s work offers vivid and clean lines with vibrant and cheerful colors, and daring compositions with contemporary touches in which it is easy to note the influence of Neo Cubism and Pop Art. The artist’s optimistic vision permeates her paintings and invites a celebration of the simple and beautiful things in life. Vallejo’s artwork has been exhibited in Monaco, Belgium, France, China, Colombia, Peru, and the United States. Her art piece “Passion” was exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Her work will be on display February 1 through 28.

Writing Buddies (K-5 grade), Saturday, February 9, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Teens will be paired up with young budding authors to guide them through the story creation process. Each child will write and illustrate a mini story to take home. This group meets once a month, and a different genre will be explored each month. Parkland Library card required to register. Juniorettes’ Reading Buddies (grades K-5), Monday, February 11, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? The Juniorettes’ Reading Buddies is a cross-age, effective method of energizing young readers. Parkland elementary school age students are welcome to attend. When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are picked up in an enjoyable manner. Building partnerships between our high-achieving, high school girls and elementary-age children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. Adult Coloring Book Art, Tuesday, February 12, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Decompress and let your mind wander while enjoying this latest creative trend: coloring books for adults.
