Here is a list of the upcoming activities for both adults and children at the Parkland Library from May 1-15.

Adult Craft: Book Folding, Wednesday, May 1, 12:30 p.m.

Cultivate your crafty side with this fun and easy project that will result in an artsy sculpture made by folding the pages of a book. And this session we’ll have a new option that’s perfect for Mother’s Day! No experience necessary. All materials will be provided. Parkland Library card required to register. Brain Health: How to Be Proactive, Wednesday, May 1, 6 p.m.

Individuals who have concerns about their memory or who have a family history of dementia can be proactive in their brain health and potentially reduce their risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. Marcia Walker, a research nurse practitioner at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, will give an educational talk aimed at people ages 50 and up. She will discuss dementia prevention initiatives and explain what is offered at The Comprehensive Center for Brain Health at FAU. Attendees will also have the opportunity to gain more information about participation in the center’s program. Registration required. All Booked Up Book Discussion Group: The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti Saturday, May 4, 10:30 a.m.

Samuel Hawley isn’t like the other fathers in Olympus, Massachusetts. A loner who spent years living on the run, he raised his beloved daughter, Loo, on the road, moving from motel to motel, always watching his back. Now that Loo’s a teenager, Hawley wants only to give her a normal life. In his late wife’s hometown, he finds work as a fisherman, while Loo struggles to fit in at the local high school. Growing more and more curious about the mother she never knew, Loo begins to investigate. Soon, everywhere she turns, she encounters the mysteries of her parents’ lives before she was born. This hidden past is made all the more real by the twelve scars her father carries on his body. Each scar is from a bullet Hawley took over the course of his criminal career. As Loo uncovers a history that’s darker than she could have known, the demons of her father’s past spill over into the present. Registration is not required. Artist of the Month: Kamala Artist’s Reception, Saturday, May 4, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Kamala means lotus in Sanskrit. Like the lotus flower, Kamala’s artistic talent has blossomed under the bright Florida sun. Kamala is the proverbial late bloomer when it comes to painting. From barely being able to draw an apple, today she has progressed remarkably in her 70s. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, Kamala has had a variety of experiences, having lived in Singapore, different places in India, England, mainland Europe, then New Jersey and now Florida. She was married at the age of 17 to Ramachandran and has two daughters. After the passing of her husband, she learned a famous South Indian painting style known as Thanjavur painting, which is mostly of Hindu deities, enhanced with semi-precious stones and gold foil laid over raised relief. With encouragement from family and friends, she has nurtured and developed her painting skills and has developed her new-found talent with the guidance of YouTube tutorials. This month she will be presenting her paintings, which are based on these tutorials. Her work will be on display at the Parkland Library May 1 through 31.

Writing Buddies (K-5), Saturday, May 4, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Teens will be paired up with young budding authors to guide them through the story creation process. Each child will write and illustrate a mini story to take home. This group meets once a month, and a different genre will be explored each month. Parkland Library card required to register. Adult Art Class: Watercolor & Art Nouveau, Tuesday, May 7, 10:30 a.m.

Learn tools for infusing creativity into your daily life. Certified Teaching Artist Lori Arbel will guide students through pattern making and watercolor. You will create a meaningful work of art. Sahaja Meditation (adults & teens), Saturday, May 11, 10:30 a.m.

This simple, time-honored meditation reduces stress and increases wellness. It brings better focus and helps people become more centered and better balanced. Anyone can do it. Yellowbirds Hawaiian Music Performance, Wednesday, May 15, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
