What started as a car parade in 2020 due to COVID-19 has become one of the most talked about events in the City of Coconut Creek: Olga Torregrossa’s annual birthday car parade.
This year marked a special milestone as the community came together to celebrate “Miss Olga’s” 104th birthday.
Her 104th birthday car parade brought out Coconut Creek’s finest, bravest, and even the city’s top officials.
The event was hosted by Robert Reid Schenck and reflected on the challenges of the past few years. “We weren’t able to have a party for her 100th birthday due to COVID. It seemed to be catching,” he said, recalling the inception of the parade tradition.
Miss Olga herself was taken by surprise by the grand celebration. “My 104th birthday was very special, and I didn’t expect it,” she shared, clearly moved by the community’s gesture.
Officer Christian Salas led the parade, accompanied by Coconut Creek Police, Mayor Sandra L. Welch, Vice Mayor Jackie M. Railey, and Commissioner John Brodie, who expressed their admiration and joy at being part of the celebration.
“They had a very special day planned for Olga, and why would we not want to be a part of it,” Mayor Welch laughed, highlighting the collective spirit of the community.
Commissioner Brodie echoed this sentiment: “To be as active as she is at 104, it’s amazing to read about that. When I heard, I had to be here.”
Vice Mayor Railey added, “When you hear something that you can celebrate for one of your neighbors, one of your residents, you’re only more than willing to come out.”
Reflecting on her long life, Miss Olga expressed gratitude towards her neighbors at Deerfield Lakes. “They’re wonderful,” she said, adding, “[They are] wonderful people to do this for me.”
