The question of whether Coconut Creek will continue working with RedSpeed to provide school-zone safety through cameras came up during the September 10 commission meeting.
Police Chief Fred Hofer updated the commission on the city’s relationship with RedSpeed. Hofer told the commission that Captain Fred Shelton handles RedSpeed on behalf of the police department, and he said he supports Shelton. Vice Mayor John Brodie said the police department and the commission identified a problem: RedSpeed has not been communicating effectively with the city.
During the active enforcement period, May 22, 2026, to June 3, 2026, 445 total notices of violation were captured. Of those violations, 264 notices of violation have been fully paid and resolved, and the rest are being resolved, according to city information.
Active speed cameras are at Coconut Creek High School at 4400 NW 15th Street, Winston Park Elementary at 5000 NW 39th Ave, and Tradewinds Elementary at 5400 Johnson Road.
Additional cameras are planned for more locations in the city, according to city information.
Brodie said there are concerns about poor communication between RedSpeed and city leaders. During the meeting, Hofer said that engineers involved with the cameras in Broward had been replaced. There are also concerns about how RedSpeed is handling cameras it promised to place in front of schools on county roads. Those cameras have not been installed yet.
“That is a problem, and they need to respond to us by November and give us an actual installation timeline, or we may terminate the contract,” said Brodie.
The commission agreed to decide whether the city will continue working with RedSpeed at an upcoming meeting in November.
