The North Broward Prep football team continued its postseason run Friday with a dominant 36-16 win over Somerset Academy Canyons to advance to the semifinals.
Not only was it the Eagles’ fourth straight victory, but Thor Hawsta also tied the school’s single-season sack record after recording his 17th of the year. Mateo Sanchez continued his incredible postseason start, connecting on three more field goals, including one from 51 yards, to improve to 7-for-7 through the first two playoff games.
Sanchez got the Eagles on the board with an early field goal, but the Cougars responded with a touchdown to take an 8-3 lead. NBP dominated from there as Braxton Bylaw intercepted a pass before Ralph Diaz connected with Luigi Borio on a long touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a two-point lead. Diaz then added a rushing touchdown to extend the advantage to 17-8.
The Eagles continued their strong play in the second half, with Christian Deering scoring two rushing touchdowns. An interception set up his first score before Tanner Gillman broke off a long run to help set up Deering’s second touchdown of the game.
With the victory, North Broward Prep improved to 6-6 this season and continued its impressive postseason run. Next, the Eagles will host Coral Shores High School in the semifinals on Friday, November 13, at 6 p.m. The Hurricanes went 6-3 during the regular season and have recorded postseason victories over Cocoa Beach and Bayside High School.
