For the first time in his career, former Marjory Stoneman Douglas first basemen Anthony Rizzo will become a free agent following the 2021 MLB playoffs.
With the New York Yankees falling to the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card game, Rizzo, 32, who homered in the loss, is now free to sign with any team as a free agent.
According to NJ.com, Rizzo just made $68 million in a seven-year pact that turned into nine with two club options picked up. His next deal probably will be for more money and fewer years and likely will be his last shot to get a big payday.
Rizzo spent his first season in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres. He then went on and played nine years with the Chicago Cubs and helped break their 108-year drought without a championship.
Then, during the 2021 season, he was dealt to the New York Yankees at the trade deadline. In 50 games with New York, Rizzo hit nine home runs, including his 250th of his career.
