The high school football season is officially underway, with Coconut Creek High School recording the lone win among the city’s teams in action.
After not playing in the Kickoff Classic but winning a summer 7 x 7 tournament at the University of North Carolina, the Cougars dominated from the start in their game against Plantation High School with Josiah Sanchus throwing five touchdown passes and adding a rushing score to help Coconut Creek take a 41-0 lead into halftime. James Petithomme caught two of the touchdown passes, while Everett Butler, Amari Johnson and Jaden Francis each hauled in one. Butler added his second touchdown of the game on a pass from Eian Givens.
The Cougars are coming off a season in which they went 9-3 and defeated Mater Academy Lakes in the postseason. Next, Coconut Creek will play True North Classical Academy on Thursday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m. It will be the Titans’ first game of the season after they went 10-3 a year ago.
Monarch High School, which plays one of the toughest schedules each season, was tested immediately against one of the top teams in the state. The Knights, who earned a come-from-behind victory over Spanish River Community High School in the Kickoff Classic, faced Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School to open the regular season and fell 49-22.
Monarch quickly fell behind by three touchdowns but responded with a pair of scores late in the first half. Jeremiah Milcent connected with Chris Cortinas for a 60-yard touchdown and also tossed a two-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Bynes.
Cortinas hauled in another long touchdown reception in the second half before the game was cut short due to lightning, with the Knights trailing by 27. Monarch will face another tough test in Week 2 against Miramar High School on Thursday, August 27, at 7 p.m. The Patriots won four games last season, with three of those victories coming by at least 40 points.
North Broward Prep also returned to the field Friday, facing Cooper City High School in its second regular-season game. Despite scoring three touchdowns and seven through their first two games, the Eagles fell 48-21.
The Eagles previously lost 41-28 to NSU University School in their season opener and will look for their first win against Coral Glades on Friday, August 28, at 7 p.m. The Jaguars opened their year with a 42-14 victory over Miami Edison High School in the Kickoff Classic before falling in their first regular-season game to Blanche Ely High School.
