Coconut Creek residents can expect curbside recycling to return in October.
During the workshop meeting on April 23, the commission reached consensus on the importance of reinstating curbside recycling. It was discontinued because of various problems, including contaminated items that led to loads of recyclables being rejected and sent to landfills, according to City Manager Sheila Rose.
The city will launch an educational campaign to encourage residents to recycle, explain how to do so, and why it is important. There will be a social media campaign and presentations at homeowners’ association meetings, and outreach events, according to Commissioner Jackie Railey.
Coconut Creek will contract with Republic Services for recycling and residents will be served with the latest equipment. All the trucks will be electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence will be used to detect contamination in the recycled loads.
Residents will receive new recycling containers, according to Railey.
Rose said that Coconut Creek currently offers glass recycling behind City Hall at 4800 West Copans Road.
