A Coconut Creek man has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening his son with a machete for forgetting to wish him a happy birthday.
On Saturday, October 19, the Coconut Creek Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance with a deadly weapon call.
According to CCPD records, the call came after a family matter escalated into a confrontation involving a machete. The report shows that the altercation began between a man, later identified as Laron Whiters, 56, and his son after Whiters became irate that his son did not wish him a happy birthday.
The victim told officers the disagreement, initially in the living room, got worse after Whiters demanded that he leave the house, to which he refused.
CCPD records show Whiters went to the garage and began packing his son’s belongings. While doing so, he retrieved a machete and confronted his son.
Whiters, who the victim said was visibly upset, allegedly came toward his son with the machete in his hand before eventually placing the machete down and moving the victim’s belongings to the driveway.
However, the confrontation continued when Whiters pushed his son in the upper chest, causing him to stumble backward into a parked car.
Police officers arrived and encountered Whiters, who refused to exit the residence despite multiple loud verbal commands. Officers also attempted to call him several times, but he declined to answer, delaying his arrest for over an hour.
The machete was recovered from the garage, and the victim, uninjured, provided a statement but indicated he did not wish to pursue charges.
Whiters was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
