Food for the Poor has been working hard to help residents of Jamaica who suffered the effects of Hurricane Melissa.
Over the past week, volunteers have come to Food for the Poor’s Coconut Creek location to help pack boxes for families whose homes were damaged or who don’t have access to food, clean drinking water, or other essentials, according to Barbara Burns, Philanthropy Advisor.
On November 1, a group of women from Calvary Chapel, Fort Lauderdale, visited the headquarters to pack boxes filled mostly with hygiene products and cleaning supplies that will be sent to Jamaica. When the women arrived, they were met by leaders from Food for the Poor, who gave them a briefing on the situation in Jamaica and thanked them for their help.
While many faith and civic organizations want to help people in need both locally and in other nations, Food for the Poor has created an organization dedicated to helping people in the Caribbean and Central America who are facing a level of poverty even the lowest-income U.S. citizens have never known. They have learned to work with various organizations in these nations that can distribute food and hygiene items. For many people, finding clean drinking water is an enormous challenge, according to Burns.
Food for the Poor has an office in Kingston, Jamaica, that Melissa did not damage. Even before the storm hit, individuals there went to work preparing to distribute supplies to families in areas that would suffer damage. Entire shiploads of supplies were en route soon after the storm hit, according to Burns.
