For the first time in nearly a decade, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Boys Golf Team won the district title after defeating Western High School by one stroke.
Held at the Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation, the Eagles shot a team total of 306 led by senior Kody Finn, who shot a 73 to finish in second place overall.
Finn has been one of the most consistent players on the team this year, playing a two handicap. He is considering playing college golf next year after a terrific high school career in Parkland.
Featured on the Golf Channel earlier this year, Finn spoke about how he managed to survive the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting on his 16th birthday. He went on with teammate Tyler Le to the High School State Championship only nine months after the massacre. For Finn, golf has been part of his therapy.
Devan Chahal is another player who had a strong round in districts. Chahal finished one stroke back of Finn with a 74. He also has a two handicap and routinely shoots around par.
The other two players contributing to MSD’s score were sophomore Andres Barraza and TJ Thompson, son of former principal, Ty Thompson, shooting a 79 and 80, respectively. Le also went with the team to Coral Springs and has had an excellent season. He had a season-best -2 earlier this year in nine-hole
With MSD down one stroke heading into the final holes, both Chahal and Barraza parred the final two holes, leading them to the victory after Western had multiple shots go into the water, which put the Eagles in front.
Currently ranked 15th in the State of Florida, the Eagles finished their season going 6-1. They also played in multiple tournaments with excellent results. Their best result came in the Big Eight Tournament, consisting of the top eight programs in the county where MSD finished as the runner-up, just two strokes back of first place at the conclusion.
They also had a couple of fourth places finished in the Sebring Golf Tournament out of 20 teams as well as the Maverick Tournament.
“This is the best team I have had since I have been coaching golf here, said Head Coach Brian Staubly, who is in year number six with MSD. “I have had individuals that have gone to States, but this is the best overall team I have had.”
Up next, Regionals will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Deer Creek Golf Club in Deerfield Beach starting at 7:30 a.m.
