A recent Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate was one of two students named winners of the Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship Monday.
The scholarship, awarded annually by the International Union of Police Associations, went to MSD grad Gabriel Gersberg, who will attend the University of Central Florida to pursue a career in law enforcement and the F.B.I.
The other scholarship recipient was Matthew Coleman, who graduated from Cooper City High School and plans to study computer forensics at Florida International University.
Gabriel is the son of Mariano Gersberg. Matthew is the son of Kevin Coleman. Both parents are members of I.U.P.A. Local 6020 in Broward County.
“The membership of I.U.P.A. Local 6020, our department, and I are so pleased and proud of Gabriel Gersberg and Matthew Coleman,” said Local 6020 President Matthew Cowart. “Being named Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholars is a momentous accomplishment, and I know that they have a very bright future in the law enforcement field.”
The Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by Sam A. Cabral, I.U.P.A.’s International President, to honor Edward J. Kiernan, a New York City police officer and former I.U.P.A. President.
To qualify for a Kiernan scholarship, an applicant’s parent or guardian must be a member of an affiliate of the I.U.P.A. The applicant must also be accepted at an accredited university or college in a course of study in law enforcement, labor relations, or a related field.
Applicants must submit a transcript as well as their SAT scores and a letter of recommendation from an official from their high school.
